Bookmark Butler

Keep your bookmarks in order.

Search, sort, clean up, back up, and restore bookmarks from one small Manifest V3 extension popup.

Browser support: Bookmark Butler runs as an extension in Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave, and Opera. Firefox and Safari are supported as import/export sources, but they cannot load this Chromium extension directly.

Features at a glance

Find quickly

Search bookmark titles, URLs, and folder paths. Filter by folder or sort by title and date.

Clean duplicates

Open the Duplicates view, keep the oldest or newest copy, or resolve one group at a time.

Edit and save

Edit or delete a bookmark, open it in a new tab, or save the active tab to the selected folder.

Move safely

Import HTML or JSON backups, skip existing bookmarks, and export filtered results as Netscape HTML or JSON.

Customize

Choose light, dark, or system mode, five accent colors, and compact density.

Manage the bar

Stash bookmarks-bar items in a hidden folder and restore them later. This changes bookmark locations, not browser settings.

Skip browsers you do not use, or use the controls below.

Chrome

The public release is coming soon. The Chrome Web Store link will be available here when the extension is published.
Open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, then choose Load unpacked.
For now, load an official release package when it becomes available and pin the extension from the puzzle menu.
Click the Bookmark Butler icon. Use / to focus search and Escape to clear or close.

Microsoft Edge

The public release is coming soon. The Edge Add-ons link will be available here when the extension is published.
For now, open edge://extensions only when an official release package is available.
Pin Bookmark Butler from the Extensions menu.
Use the same popup controls; Edge exposes the Chromium bookmarks API used by the extension.

Brave, Opera, and other Chromium browsers

Open the browser's extensions page (for example brave://extensions or opera://extensions).
Enable developer tools, choose Load unpacked, and select dist.
If the browser blocks an API, use the HTML/JSON backup workflow below to manage bookmarks in a supported browser.

Firefox

Export bookmarks from Firefox: Library (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+O) → Import and Backup → Export Bookmarks to HTML.
Open Bookmark Butler in Chrome, Edge, or another supported Chromium browser.
Use Import and Export → Import Bookmarks, choose the Firefox HTML file, select a destination folder, and optionally skip duplicates.
Export cleaned bookmarks as HTML, then import that file back in Firefox through Import and Backup.

Safari

In Safari, choose File → Export Browsing Data → Bookmarks (wording can vary by macOS version).
Open Bookmark Butler in a supported Chromium browser and import the resulting HTML file.
After cleaning, export HTML and use Safari's File → Import From → Bookmarks flow.

Local builds are currently closed while the extension is being prepared for public release. Store links and the official download will be added here when they are ready.

Back up before cleaning

Open the download menu and export JSON or Netscape HTML before bulk changes.
Use the folder filter and search field to verify the working set.
Review the Duplicates view before choosing a cleanup strategy.
Keep the exported file somewhere safe; importing it later can restore bookmarks into a selected folder.
